Semi-Aquatic |
|
|
The Semi-Aquatic setup is required for most turtles and some amphibians. These needs may change throughout the year, however, with amphibians from temperate areas tending to become more terrestrial during the winter month, before returning to the water to breed in the following spring. A partition will be required to keep the land separate from the water a glass pain will be fine and should be sealed with aquatic glue sealant. A slop should be provided for easy access to the land. Try to avoid rock piles in the aquatic section as dirt can accumulate behind them, and could injure occupants if they are dislodged or even break the glass. Aquatic Gravel will be an ideal substrate for the aquatic area. A suitably large vivarium will be required for turtles, which will include a sandy area with spotlights above to maintain the temperature when they are out of the water, females can lay their eggs in the sand and can bask under the warmth of the lights. The temperature of the water will depend on the occupants, most turtles will require a temperature of around 75-80°F (24-27°C), but amphibians coming from temperate areas will require lower water temperatures, often not requiring any heating. If keeping turtles in the vivarium plants should not be included as they will often up root them and they make it difficult to clean the water area. For amphibians however, aquatic vegetation can encourage spawning, and they make it easier to remove the eggs, which should be wrapped up with the plants and can be removed and reared in a separate container.
