Lighting does not only provide warmth but is also essential for the well being of he occupants of the vivarium. In their natural environment, ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight falls on their skin and stimulates the synthesis of D3. This is a vital vitamin which helps the creatures to absorb vital calcium from their diet.
Reptiles that lake D3 will develop weak limbs, abnormally soft shells (in chelonians). A full spectrum (UVB) light in the vivarium will help prevent this from occurring as it mimics the suns natural radiation. It stimulates their appetite and has a general tonic effect, as well as synthesizing vitamin D3.
Florescent tubes for this purpose are available from specialist reptile stores. The vivarium occupants should be able to bask directly under the UVB light to gain the full benefits.
When using reflective basking lamps with arboreal species, a wire mesh should be used around the light to prevent the occupants from burning themselves.
