There is a wide variety of vitamin and mineral supplements available from specialist herp stores. Which captive herps need, as these minerals found in there natural food in the wild is lacking in the cultivated live food. If a herp lacks vital vitamins and minerals a number of deficiencies can occur especially in growing herps. These can include, a lack of vitamin A in turtles can cause swelling of the eyelids, internal kidney damage and eventually death. A lack of calcium can produce weak bone structures in growing herps and so on. Care must be taken though not to overdose on such supplements as this can also prove fatal, always follow the advise on the product and don't use two products at once. Supplements can either be dusted lightly on the food, although if they are not eaten straight away most of this will come off, or they can be 'gut loaded' to the insects before they are feed to your herps. |
