"Live foods" are widely available from commercial suppliers, these include crickets, mealworms, wax worms and locusts.  wpeB.jpg (11974 bytes)

Crickets are the most versatile of the live foods, mainly because they are available in a variety of sizes.

Mealworms are also available in a variety of sizes, however they have not got a very high nutritional value and there hard outer casing make them indigestible for smaller species. There are now however special foods now available to improve their nutritional value, for those creatures which are unable to digest them.

Wax worms are excellent conditioners for herps but are very rich and should only be fed in small quantities.

Locusts can be fed to larger lizards who relish these large 'hoppers'.

Some species will eat specially cultured earthworms, which need to be kept in a pot of grass for a week to clean the insides of their guts.

Live foods can be caught in your garden or park but you should be cautious of these as they may carry parasites or be contaminated with weed killer.

Go to the 'live food' section for information on preparation and cultivation.
